Scrap preheating for electric arc furnaces not only helps to lower the conversion
costs, it also helps steelmakers to stay competitive in a challenging market. With
scrap preheating, EAFs can be run on very low transformer rates. This enables to
run slower when the situation demands it. Additionally, a highly efficient melting
aggregate also allows to run only part time, when 24 hour production is not needed.
With the shaft furnace technology, Primetals Technologies has demonstrated the
competence to support the market with respect to overall process efficiency, which
results in high productivity and low operational cost.
In this paper, operational results of the world’s first Mini Mill with an EAF Quantum at
TYASA in Mexico will be shown. Especially with the regard to the current market
situation, this steelplant shows remarkable figures.
