Cost consciousness is the driving force in the present market scenario. Any kind of investment
at present is either an investment in critical, outdated equipment to minimize risk (e.g.
unavailability of spare parts) or related to a short term return on investment where the ROI
(below 2 years, preferably below 1 year) is calculated on cost savings rather than increasing
production capacity.
GEVA automation is a medium sized German company, focusing since 1992 on process
automation of long product rolling mills. Out of the focus on Section, Bar and Wire Rod Mills
GEVA automation has developed advanced features in Mill Control delivering significant
improvements in performance (KPIs) of Rolling Mill Operation.
This paper describes the key requirements on features of a modern Mill Control system for
long product rolling mills, which can be
implemented as part of upgrading outdated existing Mill Control systems, providing
additional benefit on top of reducing obsolescence risk,
installed as add-on packages to existing Mill Control systems.
Advances in PLC and drive technology have enabled the development and application of
advanced features in Mill Control. These features are described and compared with prior state
of the art.
