Sustaining Competitiveness in Pomina 3 Consteel-EAF Steelwork Through Introduction Continous Improvement Process/Projects

Nowadays, steelmakers are under tremendous pressure to improve and maintain profitability or sustain competitiveness in the steel industry. This is mainly due to the fact that market growth has been slowed couple with the unbalance of supply and demand situation e.g. China’s factor. In the past, steelmakers have traditionally always have responded by launching cost reduction projects. However, these efforts have tended to be short termed improvement. Experiences have suggested effectiveness wanes as management attention is being diverted to other priorities e.g. purchasing of new technology or process or equipment etc. This paper outlines and captures the method and processes in improving Consteel –EAF at Pomina 3 Steelwork through introducing Continuous Improvement Process/Projects (C.I.P) with very specific targeted Key Performance Indicator (KPI) with minimum capital expenditure. The results KPI are namely a) Electrical Power Energy Consumption (Kwh/t) 20% improvement; Billet yield Improvement, 1.75%; Flux addition, 51% improvement and other areas such as Downtime Reduction, Maintenance Cost Reduction. It is hope that our experiences will be of help to other steel plants to improve their respective production figures accordingly.
