Modern commercial and residential building construction companies are always looking for ways to make the construction process more efficient, cost effective and environmentally friendly. However, the industrial construction sector has not been as driven to achieve these goals, but smarter construction methods can be equally as well applied to the Industrial buildings sector. The industrial sector covers a range of building functions and types, including distribution centers, warehouses and small industrial units. The sector is characterized by a common requirement for long span structural solutions and so is a key sector for elevated levels of structural steelwork. Standard steel portal frame construction dominates the sector, but other steel solutions, such as trusses, long span beams, and fabricated sections may also be used to achieve the required long spans. The dominance of the steel systems used in this sector is reflected in a recent Construction Markets survey which shows that steel frames accounted for 96.0% of all industrial style building construction in the UK compared with 0.2% for “in situ” concrete, 0.7% for precast concrete and 0.2% for timber frames. This presentation will focus on the cost factors of steel framed industrial buildings, and will highlight the advantages of using a modern High Strength Steel at each stage of the building process, as well as the accrued advantages in steel production, transportation, fabrication and environmental responsibility. This presentation will highlight the key role of Micro-alloying in being able to achieve a stronger, more durable and weldable steel that has a reduced weight per meter of section.
