The structural steel building features the advantages of short construction period and high seismic resistance. However, the strength, ductility and toughness of structural steel building will be weakened after fire. Therefore, it is urgent for the construction industry to investigate and discuss the need for reconstruction or reinforcement of structural steel building after fire disaster. In this study, a ultrasonic detection is approached to evaluate the mechanical properties and metallurgical structures of steel materials of structural steel buildings after various heating and cooling tests. Most steel materials will be converted into austenite phase after being heated to above 800℃, and then converted into partial bainite and martensite phase after water cooling. Therefore, the test results in this study reveal that the structural difference will change the ultrasonic signals, especially the velocity variation of ultrasonic wave, based on which the changes in mechanical properties of steel materials can be indirectly estimated. Such information can serve as the reference for assessment of structural steel buildings after fire.
