Energy conservation and environmental impact reduction are key concerns to ensure
competitiveness and sustainability of the steel industry as well as establishing new
manufacturing plant, especially in the zone surrounded by communities.
In 2007, steel demand in Thailand and international market had increased considerably and
the production capacity of Siam Yamato Steel (SYS) was insufficient to cope with the
demand. Therefore, SYS decided to invest the new factory and chose the latest technologies
needed to comply with the strict environmental regulations and consume lower energy
consumption.
With these concerns, the new plant is designed for manufacturing sections based on an
electric arc furnace charged with 100% scrap by using burners/supersonic oxygen injectors to
reduce the energy consumption. The dedusting system is designed to meet high standard of
air quality. The plant layout was arranged from the start for hot charging of casted blooms
directly into the reheating furnace to save energy during heating up time. The reheating
furnace is equipped with ultra-low NOx burners firing natural gas to minimize its
environmental impact. Reused/recycled concept is applied for managing process wastes to
elevate burden on the environment. As a result, the plant saves energy significantly and
minimizes the emission of CO2 and NOx.
