The 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) was held in Paris in December 2015 and the Paris Agreement was adopted, which is a new framework for combatting global warming starting in 2020. This agreement requires all countries and regions of the world, including developing countries, to lower greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, the steel industry, which is an energy-intensive industry, is expected to come under greater pressure to cut energy consumption and CO2 emissions. To make more progress with lowering global energy consumption and CO2 emissions, world steel industries including the ASEAN’s must work together on various initiatives collaboratively. This paper examines two subjects reflecting this issue. First is how the Japanese steel industry has succeeded in lowering energy consumption and CO2 emissions while achieving consistent economic growth. Second is cooperation between the Japanese and ASEAN steel industries for environmental measures.
