This study aims to evaluate the energy saving potential of DR-EAF scenario in Thailand.
The energy consumption and CO2 emissions in 2030 were forecasted by the growth rate of each
steel product multiplied with weighted average of CO2 intensity of each steel product. The
specific information used and energy reduction target were obtained from the master plan report
and the interviews with the experts from ISIT. Moreover, the CO2 abatement cost curve and the
sensitivity analysis of the abatement cost with different interest rates were studied. The results
showed that energy consumption and CO2 emissions from DR-EAF scenario were 78.53 million
GJ and 6.93 million tonnes, respectively. To achieve DR-EAF energy reduction target, 7 energy
saving measures were selected. The total energy reduction of DR-EAF route was 16.04 million
GJ and CO2 emission reduction was 1.23 million tCOeq in 2030. The investment cost required for
energy saving measure was 136.09 million USD in 2030.The sensitivity analysis indicated that
the change of interest rate affected the abatement cost while the CO2 emission reduction did not
change with the variation of the interest rates.
