Using SmartFurnace and ZoloScan Laser Off-Gas Information to Optimize DRI Melting at Nucor Hickman

The AMIGE SmartFurnace system has been in operation in both 150 ton DC Electric Arc Furnaces in Nucor Hickman, U.S.A. since 2011. The installation which includes the DigitARC PX3 DC Electrode Regulator together with the Electrical & Chemical Energy Optimization modules was enhanced in 2015 with the ZoloSCAN Laser Off Gas Analyzer in order to close the fuel control loop, providing a reliable real time measurement of the content of CO%, CO2% and H2O% and Temperature in the Off Gas. With this information, the system adapts the continuous DRI feeding and the energy input to the variations in the quality and proportion of the raw material while improving safety and significantly reducing the operation cost.
