NTM (No-Twist Mill) of No.2 Wire-rod mill in CSC is a pretty high-speed rolling mill
that is capable of operation up to 120 m/s and sustained. This NTM is built to eight roll
stands that equips with 18 gear sets in total. Any gear fault will cause immediate
shut-down and emergent repair. Each roll stand has a two-stage gear increaser that
posses similar dominant frequencies to those of other stands. It is easy to cause
misjudgment by applying conventional vibration analysis.
According to our diagnostic experiences of NTM in No.2 wire-rod mill, selected
successful stories in this article including fault assembly on roll-housing, failure due to
bearing damage, resolver misalignment, looseness of retainer locknut and squeeze
out of lamiflex thrust washer are presented to highlight the positive benefits of
vibration monitoring and diagnostic technologies in preventing catastrophic damage
and the loss of unpredictable shut-down for NTM.
Meanwhile, several advanced vibration monitoring systems and analyzers based
on the above MCM progress and developed by our FOMOS team are also
demonstrated briefly.
