"In the late 1960s Badische Stahlwerke GmbH (BSW) in Kehl / Germany started to produce
reinforcing steel with an installed capacity of 300.000 tons per year. Nowadays, 45 years later,
BSW produces more than 2.2 million tons per year with virtually the same basic conditions and
has become one of the most efficient mini-mills of the world. The plant is equipped with two
100 tons electric arc furnaces (AC), two ladle furnaces, one five-strand and one six strand
continuous casting machine and two rolling mills (2-strand wire rod and single strand rebar).
Many mini-mills have very similar equipment and material flow. The new target for BSW in the
next few years will be to increase their production to up to 2.8 million tons in a stepwise
approach, depending on market conditions.
