"The vehicle body structure constitutes the backbone of the entire vehicle; therefore it has very
important impact on vehicle performance and durability in the service life. Today the everstringent global standards for vehicle safety and CO2 emission require modern vehicles to be
equipped with an innovative body structure characterized by high strength; high performance and
lightweight design. Consequently the materials adopted to implement such body concepts must
comply with the entire manufacturing processes at affordable price. Experiences in the automobile
industry over the last decades have clearly verified that steel, compared to other lightweight alloys,
is the most economic and sustainable material for the future body manufacturing of both passenger
and commercial vehicles.
This paper will present some examples to demonstrate how newly developed high performance
steels based on the Nb metallurgy have been successfully applied in manufacturing of modern
vehicles with enhanced safety and lightweight achievements. The benefits of such steels with
improved material properties and processing behavior for the entire manufacturing processes will
be highlighted."
