"In ASEAN countries, the steel demand curve shows encouraging trends for specific products despite a gloomy economic
situation. However, today’s market conditions are ever-changing and the highest levels of competitiveness are constantly
required. Therefore, steel industry turns towards efficient and tailor-made upgrade solutions to adapt the equipment to market’s
evolving needs.
In 2014, Fives, an international industrial engineering group, was awarded a contract to upgrade the MCL2 furnace that was
supplied and commissioned by Fives in 2005 in BlueScope Steel in Thailand. The upgrade aims at evolving the heating curves
to produce DQ and DDQ grades for the production of steel with new high-end coating.
The project targets and performances are fulfilled thanks to implementation of advanced heating and cooling technologies,
optimized extend of modifications and record line stoppage duration.
This paper focuses on the various stages and challenges of this upgrade project from the perspective of the tailor-made solution
and the advanced Fives technologies implemented in this line."
