"Most of the steel plates are applied in construction, e.g. bridge, skyscraper, shipbuilding; oil line pipe etc., which are concerned with the public safety issue. Therefore, product quality is highly required. In 2013, by the inspiration of the Automatic Surface Inspection System (ASIS) installed in hot strip mill, CSC plate mill decided to bring in ASIS. After installation, testing, establishing the defect image data base, tuning the identifying modulus, and through training, finally integrated this system into plate production. And it also was the first similar system, which had been used in actual steel plate production line. This article is to describe the challenge which relates to use the gray scale image to distinguish the defects from surface scale of the plate, which is accompanied with the versatile color change & forms. Different from being used in Hot Roll or Cold Roll steel sheet, this system focus on improving the clearance of the real time image and magnification this image for inspectors to observe defects visually. By doing so to break through the limitation of constrains of inspection environment and conditions. In actual practice, this system increases the ratio of surface inspection for both side of the plate, help to identify surface defect in much early stage of plate production, which effectively decreases the amount of the plate with repetitive defects.The ASIS can greatly increase the assurance of plate surface quality and reduce the cost for reconditioning.
