Badische Stahl-Engineering GmbH (BSE) is one of the world leading engineering & consulting companies belonging to the Badische Group with its own steel plant Badische Stahlwerke GmbH (BSW) both located in Kehl/Germany. Due to the high priority and focus on safety and safe operation BSW and BSE together established its EAF safety concept which is frequently audited and up-dated by an internal expert committee. For safe EAF operation the first focus has to be put on the process itself. The right set-up of the EAF with its technological sections and the related auxiliary equipment, e.g. scrap bucket, is a main precondition for safe operation of an EAF. But furthermore this has also to be applied to the charging materials and the liquid steel handling after EAF tapping. Secondly with the right equipment set-up according to the process requirements operational reliability with minimized delay rates need to be achieved by definition of operational standards to gain efficiency as well as process and working safety. Important aspect in this matter is also the right set-up of maintenance frequencies to achieve the most efficient level regarding costs and off-times of preventive maintenance. After reaching the above mentioned conditions the third level of safety at the EAF can be reached by implementing of special supplementary safety equipment. Development and implementation of such safety equipment determines actually a major part of today BSE activities in BSW as well as other mini mills all over the world.
