Typically motorcycle fuel tanks were made of single-side zinc-nickel alloy coated steel. However, because of its high cost, some of more economical alternative materials were developed, among them was the single-side electro galvanized steel product (plated with pure zinc) by CSC years ago and has been widely used by many motorcycle makers. To further promote the performance of the single-side electro galvanized product, recently CSC has developed a functional passivation treatment on the surface, which was designed as an inorganic material to avoid interactions between gasoline and zinc layer and thereby improve the anti-fuel corrosion property. This has been proved in an evaluation test result that no red rust was observed on the test specimens after 500 hours in a gasoline filling test under environment of constant temperature. Besides, the passivation treatment may serve as a solid lubrication layer that may reduce the friction between the press die and the steel sheet during forming process and thus improve the formability. The passivation treatment also meets the requirements of REACH and RoHS directives completely. With its outstanding characteristics, the single-side electro galvanized steel product treated with functional passivation treatment will be another good choice for motorcycle fuel tanks.
