Even though measurement devices for online strip shape are used in almost all cold rolling mills the offline flatness result does not always meet the requirements. The strip flatness of rolled products must comply with ever-increasing tolerances. It is well known that the online strip temperature profile plays a decisive role in the production of flat products. However, it was previously difficult to quantify because continuous online temperature measurement has been difficult to achieve. ANDRITZ has developed together with the VDEh-Betriebsforschungsinstitut (BFI) and Kistler Instrumente GmbH a new method for continuous temperature measurement of flat strip material. ANDRITZ has built almost 1000 shapemeter rolls in the course of its 36 years of experience. The new system is the latest development after the market launch of the third shapemeter roll generation in 2004. It is designed for direct integration in the shapemeter roll. There is no need for any additional external components, additional space or special environmental condition requirements. The output is a relative strip temperature profile without any impact on the product. Moreover, this method is independent of the strip material properties. The new system has been successfully tested in both a laboratory setting as well as in experimental rolling mills.
