The Tundish is a vital component of the continuous casting steel making process. Acting as the reservoir of steel it functions as a heat retaining vessel for the purpose of optimising quality and productivity of the cast product. Over the years the Tundish morphology and refractory linings has been designed to optimise flow control, minimise slag attack for increased sequence length and reduced contamination of the cast steel. Reducing the temperature loss of the Tundish improves steel plant productivity. A quality refractory insulation lining, having the right thermo-mechanical and hydration properties, allows for optimal vessel capacity and superior control of the liquid steel casting temperature. Other resulting benefits are enhanced process latitude and predictability, casting speed and improved liquid steel cleanliness. Given the Tundish permanent lining may last up to 2 years, the insulation lining will be subject to constant thermo-mechanical stress and hydration. It must offer durability and stability in this environment for the full campaign.
As a result, this paper assesses the effect a dedicated refractory insulation lining has on
• Permanent Lining Castable curing, prior to tapping
• Shell temperature benefit over the sequence length
• FEA on refractories post casting
• Improvements in liquid steel temperature control during casting
• Post service analysis after 1700 heats.
