Next to the general market conditions steelmaking is highly influenced by the availability of raw materials and energy. In particular, Indian steelmaking facing challenges in terms of availability of desired quantity, price of coal, iron ore and electric energy and a significant scrap shortage. Taking into consideration, that as final asymptotic target world steel demand will be covered by 85% with recycled steel scrap and only 15% has to be substituted by iron ore, this significant scrap shortage will temporally limited. Nevertheless, in this scenario, several steelmakers have found in the use of hot metal in their EAF a convenient alternative which is increasingly gaining popularity. Moreover scrap or DRI based steelmaking has lower overall costs and environmental footprint, so it will gradually revert to be the primary raw material for steel mills.
