Reducing Zinc Consumption in Hot Dip Galvanizing
by Glen Wallace, George Voss

Category - General Novel
A range of disturbances affects the hot dip galvanizing process. Target coatings must include sufficient excess to compensate for these disturbances to ensure that the resulting product satisfies the specified minimum coating mass requirements. There is strong motivation to minimize the extent to which target coatings exceeds these requirements as they represent a significant cost to the industry. For each of the major process disturbances, we examine the reasons for over coating, the magnitude of the over-coating and techniques for reducing disturbance and hence the over-coating. Zinc savings are calculated for a range of metal coating lines.
