Application of the Newest Physical Analysis Technology to Steel Development

In recent years, high-value added automotive steel sheets such as TRIP (TRansformation Induced Plasticity) -added steel and DP (Dual Phase) steel have been developed, in order to satisfy the environmental and safety requirements. In particular, steels for structural members require higher tensile strength with good formability. The control of microstructure is an important way to improve the performances. It is well known that to refine grain size and to introduce retained austenite are the effective processes. The newest physical analysis techniques as typified by FE-TEM and FE-SEM/EBSD are essential technologies to understand the metallurgical background. Kobelco Research Institute Inc. can support and solve the customer’s needs and problems of aluminum alloys, copper alloys, titanium alloys and so on, in addition to ferrous materials by providing necessary measurement data and technical solutions. Our laboratories are located adjacent to the laboratories of Kobe Steel Ltd., and have installed items of equipment in more than several hundred categories, for example, a wide load range mechanical testing machine, microscopes to observe nano-scale structure, high resolution surface analyzer and chemical composition analyzer. Moreover, Kobelco Research Institute Inc. has improved the above-mentioned items and developed new technologies. In this paper, examples of the application of the newest physical analysis technology to steel development will be introduced.
