780N/mm2 class high tensile strength steel has been widely used in large scale pumped storage hydroelectric power stations. This is because application of high strength steel saves fabrication costs, transportation costs and fabrication time due to decrease in wall thickness and weight. These advantages have lead to consideration of using 950N/mm2 class high tensile strength plate (HT950) for penstock. On the other hand, manufacturing control becomes stricter as strength increases because higher resistance against brittle fracture is required for high strength steels. From this point of view Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. (SMI) has developed two types of 950N/mm2 class high tensile strength steel plates (HT950) for penstock. One type of steel is manufactured by conventional heat treatment, using quenching and tempering(QT). And the other type of steel is manufactured by advanced Thermo-Mechanical Control Process (TMCP). Both steels have good toughness and superior weldability in consideration of high security requirement and easy welding in humid environment. Both 950N/mm2 class high tensile strength steel plates (HT950) have been supplied to European and Japanese hydropower plants respectively and fabricated successfully.
