Thermomechanically controlled process facilitates the productions of rebar steels with higher strength and ductility. These properties are beneficial for use in countries located in earthquake zones. In order to study the effects of thermal cycles at heat affected zone during welding process, this paper reports the effects of 600-900˚C treatment on the structures and properties of both traditional vanadium containing hot-rolled and thermomechanically processed rebar steels. Rebars made by either process demonstrate good ductility and meet the requirements of CNS-560 SD420W standards for welding purpose. The tensile strengths of rebars of both types drop significantly at temperature little over Ac1 or when entering the intercritical region. It is observed that fine grain structures generated by thermomechanically controlled process benefit both the strength and ductility even after high temperature treatments. The surface-core property uniformity in TMCP rebar is also improved after high temperature treatment.
