This paper presents a novel technology for blast furnace lining thickness measurement with a laser scanner and 3D image registration method. Taking advantages of high data throughput and large measurement range of a laser scanner, measurement of the lining surface geometry of No.4 BF in China Steel Corporation was performed. Surface profiles were acquired before and after the lining repairing process, and a special data registration algorithm is developed to combine the profiles by overlapping the invariant geometry features. Consequently, quality of the gunning process can be evaluated and visualized by comparing the two surface profiles. Furthermore, in order to estimate the residual lining thickness after the repair, mathematical geometry models for some certain features are constructed as a reference for comparing with the surface profile obtained after the gunning process. The measurement technology is found to be useful by providing information for tracking lining condition throughout its campaign life.
