How to Use Niobium for Improvement of Steel Properties

Category - General Novel
As requirements for the properties of steel products have become more functional and advanced, production of microalloyed steels has increased around the world. Niobium is one of the most important microalloying elements and is used in a wide range of steel products. Nb improves the strength and toughness balance of steel by grain refining, while on the other hand, it improves the press formability of interstitial-free (IF) steels by stabilizing the interstitial atoms. It is necessary to know how to use niobium effectively in the series of processes used in producing steel, which generally includes steelmaking, hot rolling, forging, annealing, and various types of heat treatment. Although the effect of Nb has been studied under individual metallurgical conditions, industrial steel products are produced by the series of processes mentioned above, and the final properties of products are influenced by their synthetic effect. Based on the background, CBMM Asia Co., Ltd. compiled the textbook, “How to Use Niobium for Improvement of Steel Properties” by the authorities of Japanese steel industry such as Dr.H.Kajioka, former Fellow of Nippon Steel for “Steelmaking”, Dr.I.Kozasu, former Senior Fellow of NKK for “Plate”, Dr.O.Hashimoto, former GM of Kawasaki Steel for “Hot Rolled Steel”, Dr.M.Abe, former Senior Fellow of Nippon Steel for “Cold Rolled Steel”, Dr.M.Katsumata, former GM of Kobe Steel for “Wire Rods and Bars” and Dr.Y.Sawaragi, former Technology Executive, Sumitomo Metal for “Stainless Steel”. Prof.H.Takechi, Fukuoka Institute of Technology, was responsible for edition as chief editor. The brief contents of textbook will be introduced.
