Quality Improvements of Bloom with Two Continuous Casters

The new bloom caster (NO.5CC) of Kobe Works went into operation on September 1, 2006, aiming an increase of casting capacity and a quality improvement of bar and wire rod products. NO.5CC is a two-strand vertical bending machine, built by "Heavy Machinery Department Industrial Machinery Division" and "Iron and Steel Sector" of KOBE STEEL, LTD. The bloom is 430mm wide and 300mm thick. It is directly connected to No.2 Reheating Furnace and the production capacity is 60,000 ton per month. It features large sized tundish and the high cycle mold oscillation and so on, which have remarkable effect on the quality improvement of steel, taken over from NO.3 bloom caster (NO.3CC). NO.5CC produces high quality special steel successfully after the start-up, and achieves improvement of small lot productivity and steel quality based on the two machines system. This report introduces the history of quality improvement technology of the No.3CC, and design concepts used for the No.5CC.
