Reduction of Blister Defects in Steel Plates

Blisters have been identified as the main defect of steel plate. The possible causes of the blisters were identified to be related to 1) steel cleanliness, 2) shattered refractory materials, 3) mold powder entrapment, or 4) the swirling in the initial or last stage of casting. Countermeasures, such as tundish Ar sealing, manual operation enhancement and use of Quality Evaluation System to monitor casting practice have been developed and implemented. The results showed that after applying these methods, the blister defects have been significantly reduced by 75%.
