Himeji Works of Godo Steel is a steel plant with EAF, and main product is round bar of carbon steel for structural steel. Recently, quality demands have risen particularly among special steel users. One of the demands is extermination of surface defect on end of the product. Cause of defect generation was investigated in detail with various measures. Some new technologies have been developed and applied to perform a drastic improvement. As a result, the incidence of the defect has been decreased remarkably, and yield has been improved greatly. In this paper, key technologies of effective measures will be reported. (1) Controlling Fish Tail Length of Both Ends in Rolling Materials The fish tail has been improved by forming both ends of rolling material convex with in-line press. (2) Improvement in Instruction Yield Instruction yield has been improved by optimizing the crop length. (3) Improvement in Rolling Yield Rolling yield has been improved by attempting to extend AS roll length.
