ORE-based Metallics - Market Overview
by Chris Barrington
Publisher - International Iron Metallics Association
Category - General Novel
The paper begins with a brief overview of ore-based metallics and their advantages for the EAF steelmaker. A key point is that ore-based metallics such as pig iron and hot briquetted iron are not - as they are commonly known - scrap substitutes - they are scrap supplements which add value beyond that of their iron content. Information is provided about sources of ore-based metallics, followed by details of trade flows and price developments for pig iron and hot briquetted iron. After the global economic crisis of 2008-2009, trade volumes have recovered, although not to the pre-crisis level. The paper concludes with discussion of some of the issues that will affect the future supply-demand balance for ore-based metallics.
