What happens when you find your business has reached its full order capacity? How will you service further increases in demand? Build a new facility? How quickly can the new facility be brought into commercial operation? How will we service increased demand whilst construction is underway? PT. BlueScope Steel Indonesia has faced these hard questions in the last year and a half. We are currently doubling our manufacturing capacity with an additional metal coating line and paint line. Completion of this expansion is expected in 2008. To manage the opportunity of increased demand, we decided to use BlueScope Steel’s Asset Utilization “Uptime” improvement methodology to rapidly lift production with the existing facilities. Using this process, we engaged the whole business team in manufacturing excellence, thus helping to ensure when the new facilities come online that they will be fully utilized. This paper describes the journey of engaging people in what is possible and the progress of the project including the resultant benefits that are being delivered to the business.
