Revamping and Operation of No.2 Billet Caster at Pohang Works of Posco

No.2 Billet caster at Pohang Works of POSCO which had started at 1988 has been revamped after start up of a large section bloom caster of 8 strands in Feb. 2011 and it was put into operation in Feb. 2013. In order to increase productivity and cast high grade steel such as cold heading quality(CHQ) steel for automobiles, piano wire steel, and high carbon(C=0.72~0.82wt.%) steel wire rods, modification of tundish preheating system, mold oscillation pattern, secondary cooling zone, and air mist nozzle, increasing capacity of mold cooling water supply, setting of heat insulation cover at casting bow frame II, removal of strand EMS, and installation of soft reduction equipments were carried out during about two years including their design and manufacturing. From the above revamping, annual produtivity can be raised to 0.75 million tons by aid of easy start of casting, increasing casting speed and heat numbers of sequence casting, and production cost can be also reduced. The high grade steel can be produced by improvement of surface and internal quality due to modified mold oscillation pattern and secondary cooling method, increased capacity of mold cooling water supply, (M+F)EMS, and soft reduction.
