At any given time there are numerous steel projects under planning or implementation. Different companies have different approaches to planning and implementing. Concept planning is done first involving decisions on product mix, capacities, technological route / production equipment specifications and infrastructure requirements. Decision on project implementation approach i.e. Non-EPC or EPC basis is taken simultaneously and the work order packages are decided accordingly. Small to mid-level companies do not always clearly understand project requirements thereby making mistakes in concept planning, implementation approach and proper equipment specifications. A Consultant plays the role of a project manager and project engineer and works as an extension of owner’s project team assisting companies in making right project strategy and achieving their objectives. Consultant’s support ensures a clear and sound concept with smoother & faster project implementation. Non-EPC implementation requires an experienced project team of the owner. While EPC projects give more comfort to owners and bankers, the owner has to safeguard against deficiencies in the project and plant & equipment. This paper discusses various project implementation approaches and Consultant’s role with examples of actual projects implemented or under implementation.
