This paper gives an overview of modern mills and technologies serving today’s market. The long product market was predominately driven in the last years on high demand by construction industry with rebars as well as by automotive industry with SBQ bars and wire rod. Typical examples are shown as high capacity rebar mills or small capacity mills serving the local market. Since rebars are very price driven, new concepts and technologies are introduced to reduce conversion costs like Compact Mini Mill Technology CMTTM, HSD®-system for high speed rebar rolling or VCC®- system for spooled rebars. In wire rod rolling the MEERdrive® wire rod block is a milestone, which allows maximum flexibility and also to reduce the conversion costs. The Precision Sizing Mill (PSM®) is the core of modern SBQ-mills. By hydraulic gap control in combination with a special laser bar gauge (MEERgauge®) it allows close tolerances and automated operation. All of these technologies focus on economical mills which are able to produce the product at lower conversion cost compared to conventional mills.
