The plate Steckel mill concept differs from the conventional plate mill in that slabs are cast at the final plate width in this case up to 3250mm wide. This avoids the need to turn the slab and use broadside rolling to develop the full plate width. It is not just the slab width that is impressive, but the fact that slabs can be up to 17600mm in length, with a weight of 67 tonnes. Using slabs of this size enables multiple mother plates to be rolled from one slab. This results in a highly efficient operation, but also introduces a number of new process challenges compared to the conventional plate mill operation. This paper explains how Siemens VAI and Siemens I&S designed and commissioned China’s first plate Steckel mill plant in Nanjing and successfully addressed these unique process challenges. Key aspects of the equipment design, the project organisation and the results from the first year of operation are described.
