Continuous Caster Design for High Quality Steel in Nippon Steel Corporation

by Keiji Tsunenari, Shozo Shima, Yasuo Maruki, Takehiko Toh, Masahumi Tani

Publisher - Nippon Steel Corporation

Category - General Novel

Demands for the surface quality assurance of sheets have increased in recent years reflecting customer requirements for higher grades of steels. The countermeasures in continuous casting process have been required in addition to the pursuit of extremely clean molten steel and the conditioning of slabs of inferior surface quality. Surface defects are arising from the entrapped nonmetallic inclusions, especially blowholes in the loose side of the strand being cast. Therefore, it becomes more important to develop the technology that realizes prevention of nonmetallic inclusion entrapment to solidified shell and enlargement of nonmetallic inclusion separation from the shell. And the technology must be applied to actual continuous casting process. In Nippon Steel Corporation, the effect of vertical bending section of caster and in-mold electromagnetic stirrer on the slab surface quality was recognized by means of theoretical analyses and plant test. Six existing bending type continuous casters were remodeled to vertical bending type continuous casters. Also, in-mold electromagnetic stirrers were installed in recent years. Furthermore the pulsating electromagnetic casting (EMC) technique has been developed.
