Electrical steels (ES) are the core material for power generators, compressors, electrical motors and transformers. To impart anti-corrosion capability, insulation, and workability to ES products, most modern ES coils have surface coatings. Nowadays there are two main coating systems for ES, the chromium (Cr)-containing and the Cr-free. So far Cr-containing coatings have been the standard system for ES and are still dominant now, even though they are not environment-friendly. And the performance of the Cr-free ES coatings must be improved to compete with the mature Cr-containing system in the market. In this paper, the next generation Cr-free ES coating, C6NM, is presented and compared with the Cr-free as well as Cr-containing benchmark coatings in the fundamental properties required by ES applications. C6NM has excellent corrosion resistance, interlayer electrical resistance, adhesion to substrates, and capability against cutting-edge rusting. The new C6NM coating can help to promote the application of environment-friendly Cr-free technologies in general-purpose applications as well as high-performance ES products.
