Globally, the current standards used for Steel Reinforcing Bar can be very different. Each Standard has been written and developed over the years by independent committee’s to meet the individual needs of their country and so would be expected to be as diverse as the countries they have originated from. The diversity includes units of measurements, manufacturing methods, allowances for special quality product, allowances for weldability, allowances for “fine grained” material and several other factors. But the basic requirement they are all searching to define is to make a Steel Reinforcing Bar that is “fit for purpose” within the given specific parameters. As the level of international trade increases, the option for individual domestic standards to align with those of other countries ton provide a potentially larger market for the product. Changes to a given countries standards can also block the import of product from countries working on differing standards as the product may no longer meet the revised conditions as set down by the given governing bodies. This can be used to prevent “sub-standard” product entering into the construction industry for a given country. In this paper, a wide variety of these specifications are examined, evaluated and compared. The perceived strengths, weakness, similarities and differences of these standards are assessed. From this, the future potential developments of Reinforcing Bar are discussed.
