A further quantum leap has been achieved in the race for high productivity and large steel plant dimensions in EAF based mini-mills. The performance of electric melt-shops has been drastically improved and with tapping capacities of over 220 tons can hardly be called mini mills anymore, but rather “maxi-mills”. After five years of outstanding results obtained with their first melt-shop in Biga / Turkey with a yearly production of 1,650,000, İÇDAŞ A.Ş started up their second melt-shop in September 2008 at the same location. The capacity of the first plant (the first SMS Concast Ultra High Chemical Power EAF of 175 t tap-weight) is now increased to 220 tons with a further 2.200.000 tons per year of good steel products (billets in section 150x150 and 180x180 mm). Similar to the first plant, the new one is based on the very same technology, utilising a single unit production concept, namely one 220 t UHCP Electric Arc Furnace, one Ladle Furnace and one eight-strand Convex Billet Caster, all operating closely linked and converting the liquid steel into the 150x150 and 180x180 mm sized billets. The paper summarizes the main technical and technological issues and features used in the design stage, particularly taking into consideration that the EAF is working with a remarkable 230 MW of total power input. All the consumption figures quoted in this paper refer to the production of good billets.
