Electromagnetic stirrers and brakes are today widely used in billet and bloom and slab continuous casting machines to improve quality, yield, reproducibility, production flexibility and productivity. ABB is the leading supplier for a complete range of stirrers for continuous casters, i.e. MEMS, SEMS and FEMS, FC Mold and EMBR. Understanding that Electromagnetic Stirring is not such a simple subject, ABB has developed some unique stirring products, i.e. Dual MEMS and Mod MEMS. For each demanding application, optimum stirring results depend on metallurgical demands and/or installation concerns. A desired solution can always be achieved with one of ABB’s unique stirring solutions. This paper will give an insight in the special features of stirrers for casting of billet and bloom and the metallurgical results obtained with ABB’s products.
