New plant projects and revamping projects for the iron and steel industry have been implemented in all parts of the industrial world during the past boom years, especially 2000 to 2008. In most cases the reasons for investing were not only to increase of output but also - improve energy consumption - strategy partnerships - technologies for recovery of valuable byproducts - reduction of operating costs with alternative processes - environmental aspects. Within this paper examples will be presented and discussed with regard to major investment targets, including comparison of consumption figures and other performance data for: - converter-based oxygen steelmaking projects for flat production - converter technologies for hot metal treatment - EAF-based steelmaking projects for carbon steel flat products - EAF-based mini-mill projects for carbon steel long products
