The demand of high performance and high value steel products has increased drastically. In general, the reducing sulfur content is the key factor in steel-making processes and the quality of the steel product always rely on the drastic reduction of the sulfur content in steel. A novel technology of desulfurization called Kambara Reactor (KR) method has been used to perform the desulfurization and the efficiency of this method reaches more than 85%. Although the KR method is the better method used for desulfurization, its lifetime was limited. In particular, the refractory onto the impeller fractures by thermal shock, which cause the liquidized iron fluid penetrate into the inner core of the KR impeller. At the extremely high temperature environment, the study of thermal stress of the KR impeller is limited. This study presents the analysis of thermal stress of the KR impeller using finite element method (FEM) under extremely high temperature environment. We then used the simulation to evaluate the different anchor arrangement design of the KR impeller. In addition, 3 control factors with 3 degree Levels were selected by using the Taguchi method. The optimal anchor arrangement design of the KR impeller was obtained. This study provides an effective approach with which to evaluate thermal stress and anchor arrangement design of the KR impeller, which is contributed to steel making industry.
