Failure Analysis of Work Roll Hot Strip Mill

It has been found four work rolls of 6 th stand Hot Strip Mill experience fail during operation. The reveal the reason of the failure, some investigations have been done. The results of the failure indicated as spalling and breaking. Macroscopic observation of the fracture surface, the failure of the shaft are two of four work roll are judge to be a fatigue failure caused by a sharp radius on stepped shaft will cause stress concentration and repetition of torsion stress. Besides, two other work roll were judge to be a fatigue failure caused heavy spalling from boundary layer.
