The formation of the scale is unavoidable during steelmaking process owing to the high temperature oxidation. Complex reactions take place on the steel surface and produce various oxide films. In this work, a Fe3O4/Fe3C composite scale formed on the carbon steel was investigated. The distinct images prepared by FIB revealed pearlite-like morphology. This indicated that the Fe3O4/Fe3C composite scale came from the pearlite phase. Hence, a mechanism of the oxidation of the pearlite phase has been proposed. Only the ferrite in the pearlite was oxidized to be magnetite but the cementite remained.
