Multi-functional Grinding Facilities for the Removal of Surface Flaws on Semi-finished Products and Flexible Solutions for A Fully-Automate Grinding of Partial Surface Defects

by Gerhard Richter, Alfred Schmuckermayer

Publisher - BRAUN Maschinenfabrik GmbH, Australia

Category - General Novel

High-pressure grinding has proven to be the optimum technology for removing surface defects on semi-finished products prior to further processing. BRAUN's multi-functional grinding machine provides fully automated full-surface, corner and flaw grinding of billets, blooms, ingots and other products. Depending on the products to be ground (shape, size and material grade), different machine designs and tailor-made material handling systems are available. Automated grinding of partial surface flaws, however, also requires an accurate detection of the defects beforehand. Furthermore, adequate editing of the flaw coordinates, subsequent transmission of these data to the control system of the grinding machine, as well as the capability of the grinding machines to accurately approach the flaw are imperative as well. In light of this, BRAUN (partly in cooperation with specialized manufacturers of surface inspection and product identification systems) has developed flexible solutions which allow the implementation of integrated, fully automated systems for flaw detection and flaw grinding, post-grinding re-inspection and data management.
