Hot dip galvanizing is a well understood and mature process for prolonging the life of structural steel. In recent years, with the increasing worldwide interest in sustainability of products and processes, end users have become more aware of the benefits of the hot dip galvanizing process as a method to increase service life, and the hot dip galvanizing industry has invested in new plant and equipment in the region to make their own plants more sustainable. Attention to the durability of steel structures and components has important environmental, economic and social consequences. By protecting steel from corrosion, galvanizing performs an invaluable service. It helps to save natural resources by significantly prolonging the life of steel and capital investments. The longterm durability provided by galvanizing is achieved at a relatively low environmental burden in terms of energy and other globally relevant impacts, especially when compared to the energy value of the steel it is protecting. This paper provides an overview of the durability, economics and sustainability of hot dip galvanizing and how the application of this method of protecting steel from corrosion is significantly increasing in the ASEAN region, providing growth markets for steel and maintaining steel as the sustainable material of choice.
