Alternative Design of Shoring System Using H300 Rolled Section

Shoring is a term to describe a system that functions to retain earth, water, and adjacent structures when an excavation is required. Typically, there are two systems in excavation shorings that must be designed: the earth retention system that contains the earth, i.e., the support wall (sheet pile, diaphragm wall, etc.) and the support system (i.e., the internal or external bracing such as rakers, struts, or tiebacks) that supports the earth retention system. The rolled H-sections are widely used for king posts, walers and struts for the support system of shorings. However, the sectional dimension of rolled H-section depends on the design standard and total cost for fabrication and installation in each country. H300X300 rolled section is widely used in Korea whereas H350X350 and/or H400X400 rolled section is widely used in Vietnam because of different design practice. In this study, shoring systems designed using H300X300 and H400X400 are compared based on the Korean and Vietnamese practices and it is founded that H300X300 rolled section could be used more cost effectively than H400X400 for walers and struts in Vietnam. The shoring system using H300X300 rolled section was applied in the rehabilitation drain system construction project in HCM city, Vietnam.
