On May 5th, 2014, a rare earthquake of magnitude 6.3 occurred in the northern part of Thailand causing severe damage to several buildings in the area. The reconstruction of several new school buildings began a few months following the event. This paper gives an overview of the observed earthquake damage and the events leading to the design and construction of one of the first applications of a steel eccentrically braced frame (EBF) in Thailand. The design of this frame is based on an innovative design concept called performance-based plastic design. A general design concept for EBFs will be discussed first. The performance target and the plastic design approach utilized in this project will then be presented. It is expected that the example building discussed in the paper will lead to further use and wide acceptance of steel frames as a suitable structural option in Thailand.
