Development of PosMent using Steelmaking Slag as an Alkali-Activator

Category - Engineering & IT

The aim of this project was to increase the contents of Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS) in slag cement which typically contains 40% of GBFS. Although slag cement has many advantages including high ultimate strength and good resistance to chemical attack in comparison to the Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), key barriers such as relatively low early-age compressive strength and high drying shrinkage, hinder spreading of slag cement adoption in the construction industry. Compared to the existing slag cement, PosMent includes 58% of slag content but demonstrates improved physical properties. It could be achieved by the addition of an alkali-activator primarily consist of the steelmaking slag. Several valuable features allowed this development. Firstly, enhance the value of steelmaking slag by developing the slag usage as an alkali-activator. Secondly, accelerate early-age compressive strength of concrete similar to that of OPC. Lastly, reduce the drying shrinkage of concrete significantly.
