Category - Engineering & IT

Amid the scarcity of oil and natural gas, wind energy is becoming the alternative. Besides its environmental friendly, wind energy can be applied on both onshore and offshore area as well. Many developed countries and developing countries started to switch to the wind energy. In Indonesia, the first wind farm was installed in SIDRAP-South Sulawesi with the capacity 75MW. Due to the high tower design, the tower should absorb the loads from weight itself called static load and from wind called dynamic load. In addition, the wind farm sometimes should be installed in extreme environment (Offshore). Therefore, strength and toughness are important in order to guarantee material performance during application. In the other side carbon equivalent need to be controlled in order to increase workability during installation. EN-S355J2+N is one of famous specification selected as wind tower structure even in extreme environment, since the requirements are minimum 355MPa of yield strength, 470~630MPa of tensile strength, and charpy impact minimum 27 Joule at -200C. The properties can be attained by Normalizing. Considering lacking in those facilities and higher cost production, PT Krakatau POSCO opted to optimize the existing facilities in order to conquer the challenge to participate in wind power project around the world. PT Krakatau POSCO produced the material with high temperature reheating and makes adjustments both rolling parameter and chemical composition to achieve the targeted properties. Since 2014 PT Krakatau POSCO was able to support World Wind Power maker such as SIEMENS GAMESA, ACCIONA NORDEX, CS Wind, VESTAS, also SIDRAP project.
