Department of Highways (DOH) in Thailand is responsible for design, construction, and
maintenance of highway and bridge. The highway bridges in Thailand have been focused on
prestressed concrete types due to the cost of construction and maintenance. In the recent
years, the rapid development of cities and infrastructure requires the designers to consider
steel bridges to minimize the effect of construction on the traffic conditions. In city area, the
new constructions of horizontal curve steel I-girder or box girder bridges are often considered
for the overpass or directional ramp highway bridge crossing state highway with huge traffic
volume to reduce the time of road closure during fabrication or installation of the bridge. For
land mark bridge, the composition of concrete and steel bridge structure is more popular and
recommended for beautification; for example, the network tied arch bridge crossing Chao
Phraya River in Sing Buri. Regarding to the maintenance of existing steel bridges, DOH is
involving the rehabilitation and strengthening of historical truss bridge with 65 meter long
span. The challenge is to maintain the traffic volume during the member and bearing
replacement. The important aspects and details of each selected projects will be presented in
the paper.
